MIBFA Contributions Explained
MIBFA administers retirement and related benefit arrangements for participating employers and employees in South Africa's metal and engineering industries. Pension or provident contributions must follow the applicable bargaining-council agreement and fund rules. Payroll should show employee deductions and employer contributions separately, using the correct membership category and contribution basis.
What MIBFA is and who it covers
The Metal Industries Benefit Funds Administrators administers industry benefit funds; it is not itself the bargaining council. Coverage depends on the employer's activities, the agreement's scope and applicable fund membership rules.
Do not assume that every business handling metal has identical obligations or that every employee belongs to the same fund category.
- Confirm the business's industry scope and registration.
- Identify the employee's applicable pension or provident fund.
- Retain current agreements and fund contribution schedules.
How contributions appear on payslips
Employee contributions appear as deductions. Employer contributions are recorded separately as employer costs and receive the applicable tax treatment, including retirement-fund fringe-benefit treatment where required.
Contribution rates and pensionable-pay definitions are set by the relevant council agreement and fund rules. Confirm current schedules, effective dates and any associated risk-benefit components; there is no safe universal percentage to apply to every member.
