How VAT works in South Africa

VAT-registered vendors charge output VAT on standard-rated supplies and may deduct qualifying input VAT. The standard rate used here is 15%. Zero-rated and exempt supplies need different treatment.

    Adding and removing VAT

Multiply net by 1.15 to add VAT. Divide gross by 1.15 to remove it. VAT within a gross price is gross × 15/115, not gross × 15%.

    When must a business register?

The R1 million compulsory-registration turnover threshold concerns taxable supplies over a consecutive 12-month period, not profit. Expected supplies under written contractual obligations can also trigger registration. Confirm the applicable threshold and effective date with SARS before registering.
