What is EMP201?
EMP201 is the Monthly Employer Declaration that every registered South African employer must submit to SARS by the 7th day of the month following the payroll period. It declares total PAYE withheld, UIF (employer + employee contributions), SDL, and any ETI claim for the month.
Late submission triggers a 10% penalty plus interest. Getting EMP201 right, every month, is the single most important recurring SARS obligation for South African employers.
How Payroll Africa produces your EMP201
Every payroll run automatically produces the exact figures your EMP201 needs. Open the Filings module, pick the tax period, and Payroll Africa generates a PDF summary of PAYE, UIF, SDL and ETI totals plus the line items backing each number. Capture the totals on eFiling, pay the amount due, and mark the return as submitted — the reference number is stored against the period for your audit trail.
- PAYE total from all employees, per tax code
- UIF employer + employee contributions with the current R17,712 ceiling
- SDL at 1% for employers above R500,000 annual payroll
- ETI monthly claim with employee-level breakdown
- Ready to capture on SARS eFiling — or hand to your accountant
EMP201 due dates and penalties
EMP201 is due by the 7th of the following month (or the last business day before if the 7th falls on a weekend or public holiday). SARS applies a 10% late payment penalty and Section 89 interest on unpaid amounts. Payroll Africa's automation dashboard flags every upcoming EMP201 so you never miss a deadline.
EMP201 vs EMP501 — how they connect
EMP201 is the monthly declaration; EMP501 is the bi-annual (August) and annual (May) reconciliation that ties the twelve monthly EMP201s back to the tax certificates (IRP5/IT3(a)) issued to each employee. Payroll Africa keeps both perfectly in sync — the same tax engine feeds both files.
