How to claim UIF in South Africa

To claim UIF you must have contributed, have stopped working for a reason other than resignation, and apply within six months of your last day. Claims are lodged on uFiling or at a labour centre with your ID, UI19, service certificate and banking details. Benefits replace between 38% and 60% of your previous earnings.

Who qualifies for a UIF claim

You qualify if UIF was deducted from your pay and your employment ended through dismissal, retrenchment, contract expiry, insolvency of the employer or reduced working time. Resignation ordinarily disqualifies an unemployment claim, though it does not affect maternity, illness or dependant's benefits. You must also be registered as a work-seeker and be capable of and available for work.

The other benefit types have their own tests: maternity benefits are claimable from four weeks before the expected birth and up to 12 months afterwards; illness benefits apply where you are off work for more than seven consecutive days; dependant's benefits are claimed by a surviving spouse, life partner or child within 18 months of the contributor's death.

    Documents you need

Missing paperwork is the main cause of a rejected first visit. Assemble everything before you lodge the claim.

    • Bar-coded ID or smart ID card, plus a copy
    • UI19 completed by your last employer
    • Service certificate from the employer
    • Your last six payslips
    • Proof of banking details (a stamped bank statement or letter)
    • Form UI-2.8 for banking details, and UI-2.1 as the application form
    • For maternity: UI-2.7 and a medical certificate or birth certificate

The claim process step by step

Claims can be lodged entirely online through uFiling, which is materially faster than a labour centre, or in person if you do not have the documents in digital form.

    • Register or sign in at ufiling.co.za, or take your documents to the nearest labour centre
    • Complete the UI-2.1 application and submit your banking details on UI-2.8
    • Sign the register — you must sign every four weeks to keep the claim active
    • The fund verifies your declared employment against the employer's UI19s
    • Once approved, the first payment is usually made within two to eight weeks
    • Continue signing until your credit days are exhausted or you find work

How much UIF pays and for how long

UIF pays an income replacement rate on a sliding scale between 38% and 60% of the salary you earned before the claim, calculated against the R17,712 earnings ceiling. Lower earners receive the higher replacement rate; someone earning above the ceiling is paid on the ceiling, so the maximum daily benefit is based on R17,712 a month rather than on their actual salary.

Duration depends on credit days. You accrue one credit day for every four days worked while contributing, capped at 365 days over a rolling four-year cycle. Someone who has worked continuously for four years therefore has close to the full 12 months of benefit available.

    What employers should do

Almost every claim problem is an employer-side record problem. If a company's monthly UI19 declarations are current and the termination reason code is correct, the claim usually goes through on the first visit. Payroll Africa keeps declarations in step with the payroll and issues the service certificate and UI19 as part of the exit workflow, so a leaver walks out with the paperwork already in hand.
